Herb Garden (The City Living Version)

This weekend I got a bug up my butt to plant a herb garden off my back balcony. I went out and bought all the stuff I needed; flower box, organic herbs, organic soil and flower box holder for the railing. Well, what a pain in the ass it turned out to be! Thanks to the hubby though I was able to get everything put together and below is the proof I now have a real honest to goodness city herb garden complete with sweet basil, thyme, cilantro and a tomato plant (in the pot on the side). Check it out!

New Camera!

I don't really make New Year's resolutions, so I am making a mid-May resolution to take more pics! When we got our old camera about 5 years ago we purchased the extended warranty from Best Buy and boy did it pay off. We had the camera in 4 times for repairs in the past 5 years and they finally junked it and let us pick out a new camera. We decided to upgrade and go for the Canon Powershot Elph. Here are some pics below of Mr. Smith with the new camera:

Bake me please!!

My quest to find a bakery in the Chicago area that will make me something delicious that is wheat, soy and dairy free is coming to a screeching halt. Dom and I tried Bleeding Heart Bakery as well as Sweet Cakes. I also did some research online to try to find a local bakery that might be accommodating to no avail. Now, anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE sweets. But on my new diet (no soy, dairy, wheat, garlic or blueberries) I really have had to cut back on the sweets big time. Most processed sweet foods contain soy lechin. I have been able to find a few products from Trader Joe's that are super yummy. My favorite is their gluten-free brownie mix.

I also have made up my own recipes. Me and my husband (and all our friends for that matter) go nuts for a rice krispie treat concoction I came up with.

The key ingredient is schafer bergen baking chocolate that I got from my friend Jen (although you could use any kind of unsweetened baking chocolate). I melt a handful of that (about 5 pieces) with about 4 cups marshmallows, 1/2 cup peanut butter and 2 tablespoons of goat butter until I have a nice smooth creamy mix. The melting requires constant attention though, so be aware that you need to stir it so that you don't burn the mixture. After your mix is nice and smooth remove from heat and add in about 4 cups rice krispies. I use organic ones from Whole Foods so that I am not eating HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Mix together until very thick and heavy - make sure all the rice krispies are integrated into the chocolate/pb mixture. I use a 8X8 glass baking dish for the pan. It makes it easy to get the rice krispies out and into my mouth when they are ready to eat!

Let the mixture set about 2 hours (do not refridgerate) and then cut squares with a pizza slicer! Enjoy!

The Catchelorettes Review in New City

The Catchelorettes got their first (sort of) review in New City last Thursday. Check it out!

Punking Lincoln Square
In search of a new idol

Andy Seifert

A punk-rock quartet of dark-haired females known as The Catchelorettes bounce around on stage, stumbling through their sacrilegious anthem "Holy Grail" with drunken, Sid Vicious-like musicianship. Dressed like an updated version of The Go-Gos, one expects these twentysomethings to play crowd-pleasing bubble-gum pop; instead they step to their microphones defiantly and rebelliously holler "Holy grail! Fuck you and your fucking holy grail!"

Perhaps they were introduced to the dark side at the Old Town School of Folk Music, where they—and all the other bands performing at the "Lincoln Square Idol" at the Dank Haus German Cultural Center—were taught how to properly tap into the dark forces of songwriting. Tonight's battle of the bands features sixteen mostly amateur bands, each adhering to slightly different genres of pop/rock. Among them: June Carter Clash and the Tex Pistols, who posits a world in which Johnny Cash, the Clash and the Sex Pistols allied to form a punk-country concoction (minus the spitting on the crowd); instrumental trio Snarf, noticeably influenced by Spinal Tap's "jazz odyssey" phase; and an obligatory indie kid called Voluptuous Tusk, who sports red slacks and Roberto Benigni's smile and grooves to a midi drum machine while convulsing wildly around the stage like Cosmo Kramer.

There's five hundred dollars on the line for the winner, but the MC makes a valid point. "Five hundred dollars, that's up your nose in a weekend," he says, jokingly, and then points to the stage to say: "This is what's invaluable, right here."

Steve, a friend of the band, brought the article to our attention. Thanks Steve!

Add Wheat to that Please!

So, in order to "move along" my continuous and stubborn sinus issues, my naturopathic doctor suggested I try getting off wheat for the next month. That was about 2 weeks ago. I think I may be losing my mind.

A few Sunday's ago I was supposed to hang with Heather and practice "PYT", a Michael Jackson song we are covering. The plan was to catch a bite to eat at Panera and then practice. I got out of my massage late and Heather was starving, so we decided to eat at home and meet a little later. Well, I can't just have a quick bite to eat. It's a production even planning a meal out, let alone throwing together something at the last minute. I have been meticulously planning my meals every Sunday night and even have a spreadsheet that outlines each and every meal I will have for every day that week. When a wrench is thrown into the schedule I get easily frustrated. I often will stand at the refrigerator for 5 minutes poking around at bits of leftovers and logs of goat cheese before I give up and just don't eat. Nevertheless I have lost 5 lbs in the past two months.

My first crochet project!

So, Heather taught me to crochet during the SuperBowl. I made an awful bubblegum pink hat that looked so reminiscent of '90's nuevo hippies that I almost vomited. So, with the bubblegum pink color I decided not so good to wear, but maybe I could use it for other things. So here's what I made:

I am officially calling it my "first" crochet project.

Adventures in Dairy, Soy, Garlic, Coffee and Blueberry - Free Land

Well, I have not posted in a while as I have been feeling a bit under the weather. I recently found out the source of all my health woes (well, maybe not ALL of them), food allergies. The diagnosis you ask? Well, dear constituency, allergies to the following foods: dairy, soy, garlic, coffee and blueberries. Let me tell you all something, dairy and soy are in EVERYTHING. Everything I tell you. But, I digress.

My first few days of soyless, dairyless life were spent searching about in vain for something in my fridge to eat. I don't drink cows milk, but soy milk. Well that is out. I was a vegetarian until very recently so my fridge is still packed with tofu, seitan and the like. All out. I have yet to start buying meat as I am easing in to the whole meat diet again so nothing in that department. There is loads of delicious cheeses for me to purvey, but ah dear friends, it looks like my fond and close relationship with cheese has come to a grinding and definitive halt. Well, I think, I will just go out and grab something to eat. Oh, how foolish was I to think it would be so easy, so convenient! No luck I was soon to find out. Every place I went I was denied. I felt dejected. Darwin was not smiling down upon me.

I went shopping this weekend at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods - one of my new years resolutions was to eat organic when possible. My shopping time doubled as I now have to read every label of every item I may even want to possibly purchase. Several of my favorite staples I find have one or more of my allergens in the ingredient list. Ughh. After nearly 2 hours of food shopping I come home with more than $100 in foods.

My biggest hurdle yet has been to find a "butter" without dairy or soy in it. I did purchase some goat butter which I have yet to use, and am admittedly wary of. We shall see. Until next time faithful reader...

Homecoming 2007 - Fall Leaves; Memories Remain

So, this past Saturday Dom escorted me to the Homecoming dance at The Old Town School of Music. We went to dinner before hand with Jen and her date, Dan. We had an awesome meal at Mio Caro as well as 2 bottles of wine, and then hit the dance. Alas, I was not voted Homecoming Queen, but we still had fun dancing the night away!!

Catchelorettes Photo Shoot

So, we had a professional photo shoot by our friend Kelly Jung the other day. Here they are!
